Commentary

This pastel was among a few works by Twachtman owned by Thomas Edward Hanley (1893–1969), a Pennsylvania businessman and art collector, and his wife Tullah (d. 1992), a musical performer. The Hanleys had a passion for art and donated their book and art holdings to many schools and museums. The subject of the work is probably Horseneck Brook on Twachtman's Greenwich property.
