This painting belonged to the artist's estate when it was exhibited in 1919 at the Macbeth Gallery in New York. Thus, its title in the catalogue, Below the Hemlock Pool, probably accurately describes the site of this sketchy impressionist interpretation of the scene.
In 1926 the painting entered its present collection, the Lauren Rogers Museum in Laurel, Mississippi. The museum was created as a memorial to the only son and grandson of one of the town’s founding families who died at twenty-one from complications of appendicitis. While most of the works in the collection were donated by Rogers’s parents and grandparents, this painting appears to have been purchased directly from Vose Galleries, Boston.
