Commentary

This unlocated painting is related to, and possibly a study for, Spring Freshet (OP.531). The site is probably Cincinnati's Mill Creek, depicted as well in the etching, Mill Creek, Cincinnati (E.503).

A runnel of water, winding through the centre of the landscape, is encompassed at left and right by the pale green mounds of its banks; in the middle distance, along its course a group of four stripped trees. Across the background, in the pallid winter light, stretches a fantastically shaped gray curtain of woodland.
