Commentary

See the pastel, Footbridge at Bridgeport (P.802), for information on this site. Here Twachtman simplified the scene, using calligraphic brushwork over loose washes of bluish-lavender, while the distance across the river seems greater than in the pastel, as the lamppost is directly in front of the building on the opposite shore whereas in the pastel, it is to its left.

This work was included, as Bridgeport, in the American Water Color Society’s annual in 1899.
