Commentary

This painting can be identified as a scene of the Harbor View Hotel (see Harbor View Hotel, OP.1445), depicting the low porch in front of one of the eight buildings belonging to the rambling East Gloucester hotel that was on the waterfront at Wonson's Cove (fig. 1). At the right is the small detached cottage that Twachtman would rent in the summer of 1902.

The painting was included with its current title in the artist's 1901 exhibitions in Chicago and Cincinnati. It was purchased from his 1903 estate sale by the artist Allen Tucker (1866–1939), who studied with Twachtman and wrote a monograph on him in 1931. The painting was acquired from Tucker by the Brooklyn Museum in 1923.
