Commentary

This painting could depict either Greenwich or Branchville. The large rock in the foreground and the uneven terrain are suggestive of the former while the remnants of a stone wall and gate are motifs that appear in Branchville works. The painting was included in Twachtman’s estate sale with its current title. Two newspaper reports about the sale provided different spellings of the name of the purchaser, who was Herbert D. Crowly according to the New York Times and H. D. Crawley, according to the New York Sun
