Commentary

Possibly rendered in Newport, Rhode Island, in the summer of 1889, due to its reductive design and palette of tinted blues and greens, this painting was a gift in 1916 to the Allen Art Museum, Oberlin College, by the Cleveland lawyer Homer H. Johnson (1862–1960, Oberlin, class of 1885).
