Commentary

This image belongs to the group of works Twachtman created in the outskirts of Cincinnati in the early 1880s, a time when the land was being developed into suburbs. Here he rendered a road winding far into the hills, as if to suggest the development that would soon occur along its route.

A tender, green hillside under a quiet sky, this is all the subject matter, but it is an example of that period in the artist's life when he found the beauty of delicate greens an all sufficient theme. The values of tone are very subtle, the gradations fine. it is an artist's work.
