Commentary

Afternoon Shadows appears to depict the front (south facade) of the artist's Greenwich home in about 1892–93, at a point when there were two dormers on its older (eastern) section but before the last phase of remodeling extended the newer (western) section farther to the west. At the left, the western gable end is flush with the hillside.
