Commentary

This is probably Twachtman’s most closely cropped image of Horseneck Falls. Viewing the cascade from directly above the flowing water, a small plateau gushes to the right, while a steep, fast-moving drop is just above it, with the rock at the top of the falls seemingly close to its edge.

This painting was in the artist’s estate until 1918, when it was sold through Macbeth to Theodore T. Ellis (d. 1934), an inventor, art collector, who was the owner/publisher of the Worcester Telegram and that city’s Evening Gazette.
