Commentary

A barge, weighed down by its cargo and low to the water, forms the basis of this pastel’s composition, uniting the foreground and background through its wide arc. It is likely to have been among the Newport pastels that Twachtman showed at the fourth exhibition of the Society of Painters in Pastel, held in May 1890. There it was perhaps the work titled Mary Ann. Along with pastels, Sailboats and Coal Dock (both unlocated), Mary Ann was pronounced a “delightful marine touched in with spirit, but not made tedious.”[1]
