Commentary

Depicting a view eastward toward the artist's home in Greenwich, this painting was rendered before Twachtman expanded his home farther to the west in the mid-1890s, building it into the hillside. This is revealed by the presence of its western gable end, which set against the hill rather than extending into it. Showing his home set high in the scene and protected by trees within the sun-dappled landscape, Twachtman gave the simple domestic structure a spiritual presence.

When this painting was in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, from 1930 until 1979, it was known simply as Landscape, or House in Landscape, and its site was unknown.
