Commentary

Dated 1881, this painting is one of three Dutch works, along with Landscape with Houses and Stream (OP.600) and Canal Scene, Holland (OP.601), that are related in their imagery, featuring a receding waterway, a stand of trees at the right, and farm buildings on the horizon line. In each, Twachtman depicted the locale at different times of day, and this image represents evening. The glow of the sunset is reflected in the water and the darkened shapes of trees and buildings have lost definition, resulting in a flatter, more abstract design.
