Commentary

In this view of Newport, the building with a small dome in the right distance is the Colony House, built 1736–39 as a meeting house for the colonial legislature of the town (fig. 1). Twachtman depicted the same scene in a pastel, incorrectly identified as a view of Gloucester (P.808). Here he stood closer to the dock, where the side of a ship, its stern facing the viewer, continues from the vertical pilings in the foreground and connects visually with the far shore.
