Commentary

One of the twenty-four charcoal sketches that Twachtman sent to his son Alden, drawn after paintings he created in Gloucester in the summer of 1900, this image is after the painting, Grinnell's Wharf (OP.1446), which Twachtman exhibited three times in 1901 and which was included in his 1903 estate sale. The view appears to be from Rocky Neck toward the town of Gloucester. On its verso, Twachtman identified the work as "sketch" and noted its dimensions as "5 x 12."
