Commentary

This is one of the twenty-four charcoal sketches that Twachtman sent to his son Alden, recording paintings he created in Gloucester in the summer of 1900. It depicts View from East Gloucester (OP.1406). Twachtman listed its dimensions here with the width first, "8 x 16." These dimensions differ from the actual size of the painting, which measures 12 x 9 3/4 inches. It seems likely that after he created this drawing, Twachtman decided to crop the work along its top edge, creating a more balanced design. The scene is a view from Banner Hill, looking across the Smith's Cove, with the roof of the Wonson's Fish Wharf Building situated prominently to the right of the work's center.
