Commentary
One of the twenty-four charcoal sketches that Twachtman sent to his son Alden, recording compositions he created in Gloucester in the summer of 1900, this drawing depicts Waterfront Scene—Gloucester (OP.1412). On the drawing's verso, Twachtman wrote the painting's dimensions: "16 x 24." The painting is actually 16 x 22 inches. Based on a comparison of the two images, it seems likely that Twachtman cropped the painting's composition on its left side after rendering the drawing, eliminating some of the open space and thereby establishing a more cohesive arrangement. On the drawing's verso, he also wrote: "houses red and grey." However, in the painting, he used a palette dominated by crimson and lavender.
