Commentary

Among the twenty-four charcoal sketches sent by the artist to his son, Alden, after paintings he created in Gloucester in the summer of 1900, this drawing depicts Drying Sails (OP.1402). In the drawing's upper right, Twachtman identified the painting's dimensions as 25 x 25 inches. What is apparent is that he chose to crop the painting five inches in width at a later point, as Drying Sails measures 25 x 20 inches. In doing so, he eliminated the smaller vessel at the left and diminished the presence of the building at the right. It is clear that Twachtman rendered Drying Sails in the summer of 1900 as he exhibited it in his solo exhibitions in Chicago (January 1901) and Cincinnati (April–May 1901).
