Commentary

Among the twenty-four charcoal sketches sent by the artist to his son, Alden, after paintings he created in Gloucester in the summer of 1900, this drawing depicts Wild Cherry Tree (OP.1405), a view from Banner Hill in which Twachtman interspersed the forms of the shore and harbor with those of a tree, whose branches spread across the picture plane. On the drawing's recto, Twachtman wrote: "Gloucester seen through the trees, 30 x 30 in." On the verso, he jotted a personal note to his son: "Do you want some more?"
