Commentary
One of the twenty-four charcoal sketches Twachtman sent to his son Alden, after paintings he created in Gloucester in the summer of 1900, this depicts Fishing Boats at Gloucester (OP.1420), conveying its strong foreground shapes seen from above and the buildings receding along the crowded shoreline. On drawing's verso, Twachtman accurately recorded the painting's dimensions, with its height listed first: "25 x 30," and wrote: "Looking on the decks of vessels. Gray and white."
