Among the twenty-four charcoal sketches Twachtman sent to his son, Alden, after compositions he created in Gloucester in the summer of 1900, this drawing depicts Under the Wharves (OP.1425), an oil created by Twachtman from two cigar boxtops joined together. In rendering the painting, he used an open shed as a frame within his design, which he indicated in this sketch and in the painting. In a personal note to his son, he wrote on this drawing's verso: "I am getting sleepy."
