Commentary
Painted on a mahogany cigar box top, this painting has a label on the back that reads: “Twatchman [sic]—I think Italian Salt Ship at a Gloucester Wharf. Bought of the artist for $25.00. framed by Williams and Everett [fig. 1].” The owner, who purchased this painting from the artist, is unknown, but could have been a resident of Boston, where Williams and Everett art gallery was in business from 1855 to 1907. The current frame on the painting may have been that referred to in the label. Nonetheless, the painting’s history is unknown before 2011, when it was in a sale from a Connecticut estate. The locale is probably a dock on Gloucester’s Rocky Neck, looking across the Inner Harbor.
