Mary Baskett notes that the four known proofs of this etching represent Twachtman's "most dramatic changes to an etching plate." Rendered on a large-size plate, the work relates to the pastel Harbor at Night (P.708) in its subject and composition. However, the central vessel in the pastel seems to be a view in reverse of the boat anchored in the left distance in this image. The large windmill is silhouetted similarly in the pastel Dutch Landscape (P.701).
This work is titled Evening at Dordrecht in Ryerson 1920.
The impression of this etching in the collection of the Terra Foundation for American Art, illustrated here, is a lifetime print, State III.
Lifetime states (from Baskett 1999)
