The wooden footbridge crossing Bridgeport's Inner Harbor on the Pequonnock River and its toll house provided Twachtman with a subject he used to explore compositional possibilities in several mediums, including a small-plate etching (E.802) as well as in this large-plate version. In one print he pulled from the plate, he added pencil and pen-and-ink modifications to depict electric wires extending in several directions and made other changes to the image that he appears to have decided to eliminate for this printed version (fig. 1). However, he achieved his most successful view of this subject in the small-plate etching, E.802, where he darkened the toll house and strengthened the diagonal of the bridge.
The impression of this etching, illustrated here, is a unique lifetime print.
