Commentary

In its subject matter, this large-plate etching is a more elaborated and reversed version of the painting (OP.826) of this subject, in which the orientation is reversed, and of the small-plate etching (E.806), with the same orientation There are similarities in this work with features in both these images, while here Twachtman included two tall bare-masted ships that are not in any of the other Bridgeport views. His style in this instance differs from that in the other images, demonstrating a tighter, more rectilinear approach in which line rather than mass prevails, giving the work a greater sense of distance and less visual unity. Mary Baskett writes that due to this work's size, Twachtman probably intended it for publication by a professional printer, but it seems that this never occurred. That Twachtman did not sign the plate suggests that he may have felt the work was less successful and less characterstic of his art than the smaller etching (E.805), based on the painting, in which he inscribed his initials in the plate.
