Commentary
Like so many of Twachtman's works, this painting's title is not original. The scene depicts a view of Cos Cob’s Lower Landing (see Cos Cob, OP.1500), featuring its warehouses and stores. The building at the far right appears too small to be the tide-powered mill operated by Joseph P. Holley, which was built about 1763 and burned down in January 1899. However, it is possible that Twachtman diminished its scale for compositional purposes. The painting was one possibly created by Twachtman as a demonstration piece for his Cos Cob students, who followed his example in setting up their easels across the mill dam from the Lower Landing (see OP.1500, fig. 3).
