Commentary

In this Venetian scene, Twachtman's view was from the Giudecca or the Sacca Fisola on the Giudecca Canal. On the extreme right is the Church of Santa Maria della Salute and the Tower of San Marco. Toward the left are the Church of the Gesuati, partially hidden by trees, and the tower of the Church of San Basilio. Twachtman accommodated his panoramic perspective by his choice of a horizontal format, portraying the city as an illuminated shape against the darkened land and hazy sky. Depicting two figures in the distance gazing toward the city, Twachtman acknowledged his own contemplative experience in seeing Venice from afar.
