Commentary

This large plate etching was created in "four distinct states of execution," as documented by Mary Baskett (see Lifetime states). The work is among the three printed by Christian Klackner in 1888 for distribution. In the distance is the dome of the Groothoofdspoort in Dordrecht (fig. 1), indicating that the view is looking south across the Maas River. The image is probably a composite, but one created by Twachtman by joining together aspects of several plein-air works.

The impression of this etching in The Cleveland Museum of Art, illustrated here, is a lifetime print, State IV.

Lifetime states (from Baskett 1999).

I. Only one boat at dike in center of composition.

II. With two boats at dike.

III. Boat added at left plate edge along dike; another clump of reeds added to right of existing ones in foreground; one known proof on paper with impression of final state of [E.705] also printed on it.

IV. Boat added at left plate edge along the dike; another clump of reeds added to right of existing reeds in foreground completed; publication line added above upper left corner of etched borderline, "Copyright 1888 by C. Klackner 17 E 17th St. N.Y."; Klackner edition.
