Hale Concordance
The first catalogue of Twachtman’s work was created by John Douglass Hale (1910–1995) in the second volume of his 1957 dissertation on the artist (Hale 1957). Hale, whose doctorate was in studio art, became a professor of art history at Arizona State University in 1956. Hale divided his catalogue into two parts: located works (catalogue A) and works with unknown whereabouts (catalogue G). Both catalogues are organized alphabetically by the most prominent word in a title. Thus, The Mill in Winter is followed by Old Mill in Winter; Tiger Lilies is alphabetized by “Lilies”; and Artist’s Last Painting is listed by “Last” rather than “Artist’s.” In catalogue G, Hale assigned numbers freely, both to works for which images were known to him and to works for which he had only a title from an exhibition catalogue or article. The result is that in Catalogue G, there are often multiple numbers for the same work and numbers that cannot be linked with any known work. This concordance links all entries associated with a given work in Hale 1957 with this catalogue.
